Città di Castello

Città di Castello is a town in the province of Perugia, situated on the upper part of Tevre river's valley. It was built by Umbri, then the city was under the Romans control. They called the city Tifernum Tiberinum. Pliny built there a superb villa, that's been recently discovered on the south side of the town. Città di Castello was destroyed by king Totila during the Ostrogothic campaign, but it was rebuilt by the bishop Florido. The city became subject to the Holy See in 752 a.D. During the XIIIth century, the town took the name Civitas Castelli. Ater the alternating government of Guelphs and Ghibellines, the city was taken by the commander Braccio Fortebraccio da Montone. In a few year, however, Niccolò Vitelli became the new absolute ruler. In 1474 Sixtus IV tried to siege the city: when Vitelli surrendered, Cesare Borgia took his place, in name of the Church. In 1860, the city became part of Italy.
