San Gimignano
San Gimignano was settled in Etruscan period (IIIth - Iith century b.C.); the history we know began in the Xth century, when the city took its actual name from the Bishop of Modena that, it's said, saved the city from the aggression of barbarians hordes. San Gimignano had a great development in Middle Age, thanks to the " Via Francigena 2 (the pilgrim's route crossing the town), and in 1199 reached the status of free commune. In that years, the city had to fight Volterra's Bishops, and then it divided into two factions (Guelphs and Ghibellines). In 1348 San Gimignano's population were considerably reduced by the Black Death Plague. That gave its contribution to put the city in a serious crisis, that was defeated only when its beauty and its cultural importance were rediscovered.
