Montevarchi
Montevarchi town is positioned in the Valdarno Superiore (Upper Valdarno, on the hills of Chianti). The small city was settled there during the middle age, around a market place near a castle named Montevarchi. The castle, owned for years by the noble family Guidi, went to Florence after 1273. Because of its position, on the boundary between the provinces of Florence and Arezzo, the castle suffered many damages and assault.
However, thanks to the city wall that have been built in 1338 the city gained more possibilities to defence from attack. The main economical activity of Montavarchi remained the marketing of agricultural products, also if new activities like the production of silk and wool flourished. After 1860, the city become part of Italy, and two new market grew up in the town: the first concern the production on electrical energy, the second the production and marketing of felt hat.
