Montalcino ( city of the province of Siena, Tuscany)
The territory near Montalcino has been probably settled since primitive times, because here have been found handmade rock objects of 30.000 - 31.000 b.C. However, the area were populated also in the Etruscan period and in the Roman too. Maybe when Romans settled here, the town was born. Someone else says that the city was born in the Xth century a.D. About 935 a.D. the city had a great development: there was a growth of population and the flourishing of craftsmanship. Montalcino remained until the Duchy of Florence was amalgamated into a united Italy in 1861.
Pienza ( Siena )
The History of Pienza is very linear and simple. Corsignano (this was the ancient name of the town) was the birthplace of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, who later became Pope Pius II. Once become Pope, he established that the town had to be rebuilt, and so it was. The development lastex 4 years, and the city gained the aspect that we know, that's a typical of Renaissance period. In 1996 Pienza has been declared a World Heritage Site from UNESCO.
Montepulciano ( Siena )
Montepulciano is a town and commune in the province of Siena, in Central Tuscany (Italy) on a high limestone ridge. Placed high on top of a hill, Montepulciano is 605 m (around 2000 ft) above sea level. By car it is 13 km (8 miles) E of Pienza; 67 km (40 miles) SE of Siena; 124 km (74 miles) SE of Florence; 186 km (115 miles) N of Rome. The development of Montepulciano, settled in Romans time, began in the XIII century. Siena and Firenze fight many times to get the control over Montepulciano, that were settled in a strategic position, between Val d'Orcia and Valdichiana. So Montepulciano changed many times from Siena to Firenze, until 1500. Thanks to its position, the city developed great commercial activities. In XVI Montepulciano changed his aspect, also because of the intervention of Antonio da San Gallo il Vecchio.
