Grosseto
The city was named with its actual name for the first time by the Pope Innocenzo the 2nd, in 1138. We don't know when the city of Grosseto was built: we can only trace it back to the Middle Ages. In that period, Aldobrandeschi family controlled this part of Tuscany. Under the reign of Aldobrandeschi, until XIIth century, Grosseto grew powerful. In 1138 the city was so important that the bishopric of Roselle was transferred there. A little time after, in 1151, Grosseto's people decided to swear loyalty to Siena. Many years later Grosseto passed against Siena, that after that conquered the city. Grosseto went definitely to Siena, after many battles and fight, in 1336. After the Cateau-Cambrèsis peace treaty Siena was submitted to Florence, so Grosseto went under the influence of that city. Medici family transformed the city in a fortress, and in the same time they drained many areas around, building a big system of ways of communication. After that, the province of Grosseto was divided from the province of Siena, and the city reflourished. The city was very active in the Renaissance. In 1860 Grosseto become part of Italian Kingdom.
