Cortona
We don't know exactly how the city of Cortona was settled. Above all, people think that Cortona was built by Umbri, than conquered from Etruscan (310 b.C. more or less). In the middle of third century a.D., in the city was built a Bishop Palace. We don't know much about the city for centuries, then Cortona reappear in a document of XIIIth century. In XIIIth century, Cortona belongs to the Arezzo Diocese, from which it depends politically too. Ladislao di Durazzo conquered the city and in 1411 he sold it to Florence.
Then the city was controlled by Medici (until 1492, when Lorenzo de'Medici, called Lorenzo il Magnifico, died). In Florence, after the death of Lorenzo, was established the Republic. Not many years after, the Bishop Giovanni, son of Lorenzo il Magnifico, became the new governor of Florence. In the meanwhile, a noble family of Cortona become friend of the Bishop. So that Silvio Passerini had the control of Cortona. After various events, the subsequent documents link us directly to 1870, when the city become part of Italy.
