Florence, the capital city of
Tuscany, was built in 59 b.C. At the beginning, it was a settlement for Roman former soldiers, that gave to the city the name of Florentia. In centuries, the city becomes the seat of a diocese, then it's conquered by Ostrogoth, Byzantine, Lombard. Florentia become an autonomous commune in 1115.

After that the city was pushed into internal strife between Ghibellines (they were lined up with the Sacred Roman Empire emperor) and Guelphs (they were lined up with Pope), who won the war. However, Florence flourished becoming one of the most important and prosperous cities of the whole Europe. Little by little Florence gained power, bought Pisa (defeated by Genova) and spread it's influence on the entire Tuscany.

However the city wasn't growing only economically, but it was increasing also its amount of population: in 1348, before the Black Death, the population estimated was of 80,000. The Medici family was the historical governor of the city: in the end of the first period of its domination was established the Republic (during that period Savonarola and Machiavelli, that were living in Florence, influenced very much politics).
Back to the government of the city for the second time, Medici family was chased away; the third time they tried to govern the city, Medici become duke of Florence first, then Grand duke of Tuscany, and reigned continuously for two centuries more or less. Lorenzo de' Medici was a great patron of arts: under his reign lived and worked for the city many important person as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli.
The extinction of the Medici line brought Florence and the Tuscany to enter under the influence of Austrian Crown: after Medici, in fact, Francis Stephen, duke of Lorraine, went to the power and married Maria Theresa of Austria.

The influence of Austria ended when it was defeated from France and Sardinia-Piedmont in 1859. In 1861, Tuscany become part of the Kingdom of Italy, and Florence was italy's capital from 1865 to 1871. In November 1966, the Arno river flooded part of the centre, and it damaged many private buildings and art treasures. In 1982 UNESCO declared the historic centre of Florence a World Heritage Site.
