Territory
The Val d’Orcia is a wide valley situated between the areas of Siena and Grosseto, in Tuscany. Crossed by the river Orcia that gives it its name and with the imposing Amiata mountain in the south, the Val d’Orcia is characterised by its stunning panoramas and by its picturesque medieval villages. The Val d’Orcia hamlet towns, like the enchanting Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, San Quirico d’Orcia, Castiglion d’Orcia, Rocca d’Orcia, Radicofani, Bagno Vignoni and Seggiano, are all rich in history, traditions and delicious gastronomy to enjoy and discover. The Valley is as well an important natural, cultural and artistical area, recognised as a world heritage site by the UNESCO for its stunning and excellentntly preserved scenery, and for the equilibrium, established for centuries, between nature and human activity. The Val d’Orcia, due to beauty and uniqueness, had in fact a strong influence on many Renaissance artists like the the renowned painters of the Senese school. The imposing Amiata mountain, an inactive volcano, dominates the enchanting Val d’Orcia from the South. The Amiata territory is shared by the councils of Seggiano, Castel del Piano, Santa Fiora, Arcidosso, Abbadia San Salvatore and Piancastagnaio. The luscious monte Amiata has been an essential resource that sustained for centuries the various towns scattered around its foot: still important are the wood, chestnuts, chestnut honey, the renowned Olivastra di Seggiano Oil and the abundant game. At this time the Amiata is a renowned ski resort as well, with 12 skilifts, 12 downhill trails and 4 cross-country trails. |
