Montalto di Castro - Tarquinia

|
History of Montalto di Castro (city of the lazio region, in the province of Viterbo, at only 5 minutes from the sea)
According to legend, Montalto was founded in the 5th century A.D., but is during the period of MiddleAge (853 a.D.) that Montalto emerges from legend. The Guglielmi Castle, that tower over the city, has been built in XV century by Orsini. For centuries, the Popes tried to conquer Montalto, but they had to face the powerful barons of Vico, feudal lords of Montalto. When the Pontiffs defeated them, they found that the countryside was in ruins, and the population had had a fearful decrease. Pope Martino V took care about the land and the Montaltesi that were still living in the territory. In 1870, with the taking of Rome, the dominion of the Popes ended and Montalto entered the unitary state.
