History Viterbo

Although Viterbo is very ancient, we don't know its precise origins. It looks like Viterbo's been originated by an Etruscan town named Surrena. It's almost sure that the development of the city is linked to Romans, that conquered the town and built there a colony, named Castrum Herculis.

It's for sure that the medieval part of the city has been built by the lombard king Desiderio, in 773. In 852, Viterbo became part of the Papal States, but in 1095 it is known it was a free commune. In 1167 Frederick Barbarossa gave to the town the title of "city" and used its militias to fight Rome. In 1172 Viterbo started its expansion, conquering other lands.

In 1207, Pope Innocent III held a council in the cathedral. But a lot of people preferred to stay under the influence of Friederick II, so they decided to ask him to free the people from the influence of Pope. Guelph won the war, so Viterbo become very important because the Clerk decided to establish there the Papal Palace.

When the Popes were exiled, the city fell into the hands of the Di Vicos. Thenceforth Viterbo became a city of secondary importance, following the vicissitudes of the Papal States. It became part of Italy in 1871.
